Autism CanTech! (ACT!) is a federally funded program that focuses on removing barriers to employment in the digital economy for Autistic youth. It combines supportive training for participants and employer-partners, with one-to-one career coaching and the use of innovative assistive technology.
Both learners and employer-partners are supported by the ACT! Centre, where they have access to additional workshops, skills development, mentorship programming, peer networks, and larger community connections. By taking part in this program, employer-partners are provided with tailored support to create meaningful work experiences with a focus on inclusive workplaces and employment practices.
Employer-partners will also receive access and training in a new assistive technology, RoboCoach, which will support managers, coworkers, and program participants throughout the work experience. As part of this program, employer-partners provide a two month, part-time (typically 5 hours/day) work experience for ACT! Participants. Work experiences are a component of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). WIL provides participants the opportunity to connect their classroom learning to the real-world and provides employer-partners motivated, entry-level employees with technical skills, employability skills, and unique perspectives.
Work experiences are available at various times throughout the year for the duration of the ACT! Program. By working with both Autistic youth and employer-partners, the ACT! Program supports the development of inclusive and accessible workplaces and removes barriers for an underrepresented and underemployed population.
